Often, when I'm writing fiction, certain themes emerge from my writing that I don't even notice until after the fact. Sometimes, years later. I think that's because there are universal truths about life that we all know subconsciously. What we know deep down without words sometimes emerges when we're not looking. At least, that's what happens to me. Birds are one of those things. I think birds mean something.
