Politics Will Come for You - Issue #41
Your life is run by politics. Did you know that? Almost no decision you make in a day is untouched by politics. The monstrosity we are subjected to twice a year, ridiculously titled, "Daylight Savings Time" is controlled by politics. The ingredients in your toothpaste are dictated by politics. The curriculum at your child's school is determined by politics. Your Barber's ability to make a living cutting your hair is controlled by politics.
Every day quietly works an army of thousands upon thousands of political activists, determined to remake your world into their own image. Most of you aren't aware of this. They are tireless, determined, and often diabolically sneaky for better or for worse. These are the people that move the politicians. (Not my husband. He's an outlier. But the majority of politicians behave in this way.) The politicians vote for or against legislation based on the pressure these people leverage against them. That legislation gets enforced by the police, and that is how your life gets controlled.
Politics.
Doesn't matter if you like it. Doesn't matter if you don't like it. Doesn't matter if you ignore it. Doesn't even matter if you don't know it.
It's like that winding circular pathway lined with rails at the beef processing facility. It leads inexorably onward and slopes gently downward while the cows plod along, and it ends at the chopping block. Eventually, you will not be able to ignore it or avoid it. It always comes for you.
There are times in history when more people than normal are suddenly and rudely awakened to this reality. We are experiencing just such a time. Some of those activists pushed much too hard and much too fast over the last two years, and a lot of people are mad. Mad enough to poke their heads up and look around.
They noticed, suddenly, that medicine married the authoritarian state, turned their lives into a living hell, and lied about the origins of the vector and a lot of other things like the utility and efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions. They noticed that education took their tax dollars and stocked school libraries with pornography for children under the guise of comprehensive sex education. They noticed that when they tried to voice their concerns, the school boards were about as receptive as a brick wall. They experienced mockery and the government labeling them domestic terrorists. These are not religious people, per se. Just regular people who think lurid depictions of gratuitous sex aren't appropriate topics for their underage children. They noticed that months of riots and property damage got called peaceful protests and that one instance of a day of red-hatted stupidity in January got called, not just a riot, but a "threat to our Democracy." And much, much more than that.
They are super mad. And they are about to descend on a certain political party like a swarm of angry hornets.
I am no seer, and I'm making no predictions as to election outcomes. But certain publications are suddenly fact-checking our current president when they have never fact-checked him before. And that's...odd. It signals fear to me. I would be surprised if Tuesday does not bring with it a hickory switch to the proverbial behinds of a party whose name begins with D.
Not that the other party deserves a win. They don't. But they probably will get one anyway.
I will be voting according to my conscience. It won't be a straight ticket, because neither party has done anything to deserve such loyalty.
It will also be a pleasant day for me and my husband, because it will mark the end of his eight long and tiring years in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Unlike most politicians, he has run a good race. He is one of about 8 politicians in the union to revive my faith in the existence of a good politician.
I would love for you to hear his farewell speech he gave a few months back on the House floor. My heart swelled with pride when I heard it. You'll understand why if you listen below.
Here's one more thing to remember: politics may invade every part of your life. But God controls the affairs of men. God is greater than politics. Whichever way the outcome goes on Tuesday, Jesus is Lord. This is my Father's world.
That's all for now. Until next time, folks...
