Of Birthdays and Recordings - Issue #10
Birthday Week...
On Friday, I went to work on an experimental birthday cake. Due to all my food sensitivities, baking can be a challenge. I can't do gluten, cow dairy, or chicken eggs. However, I have recently discovered I can do goat dairy, A2 dairy, and duck eggs. What wealth! So, I set about making myself a gluten free lemon blueberry layer cake. It was not a gluten free recipe so I substituted Bob's Red Mill gluten free flour for regular flour with some trepidation. Here's the recipe:
Some time ago, I discovered that one of our local chain grocery stores carries goat milk and goat butter. (What are the odds?) There is also a goat dairy not far from us where I sometimes get raw goat milk. (It's so good.) And about a half an hour the other way, I can buy duck eggs from a lady who has a horse farm...and ducks. So, here are my substitutions:
You already read about the gluten free flour. But instead of chicken eggs, I used duck eggs. Instead of butter, I used goat butter. Instead of buttermilk, I used sour raw goat milk.
The result? As you see below.
In short, it was a success.
On Saturday, my husband who is a dear took me to town to do all the things I love--thrifting and going to TJ Maxx. We also met up with his brother, sister-in-law and their baby boy. I got to hold him as you can see from the first photo. He is so cute and so tiny.
We wandered around TJ Maxx looking at all the neat stuff you don't realize you need until you get to TJ Maxx. We took pictures. Jonathon convinced me to buy a new dress. He bought me earrings and a bracelet. (Yes, really. I told you he was a dear.) And in the evening, we went to a concert put on by the local community choir. It was fun.
All in all a lovely birthday weekend.
Recording...
So, between writing the intro to this newsletter and the heading, "Recording," my husband has projectile vomited twice. Indeed between the words "and" & "the" of the last sentence, he puked again. This newsletter has taken quite a long time to write due to that. I think I started around 8:30 and it's now after 11:00. After this last violent eruption, all seems quiet and I think the poor man might be asleep.
Anyhow, prior to this evening, the plan was to practice "A Better Resurrection" together (Jonathon is my piano accompanist) and record it on Wednesday. The best laid plans... But it may happen yet!
Stay tuned to Facebook for further updates. I'll let you know if it happens, post photos, perhaps some video clips. I really hope we can make it happen this week since our schedules have aligned so nicely.
Also, please forgive typos, I have been writing this between dumping the slops, sanitizing the bathroom, and a late night drive to a gas station for Coca Cola to quell Jonathon's nausea.
And now to bed! Happy Birthday to me! No more late night upchucking for Jonathon! (We are going to be optimistic.)
And I'll talk to you all later.
